I have a whole summer of updating to do and a slew (758, to be exact) of vacation pictures to sort through and post up here. But this post has been a long time coming. I had forgotten about it until my mom mentioned it recently and then I stumbled upon the pictures earlier this evening and just had to share.
Back in March we needed to apply for passports for the kids so we wouldn't have to leave them (the kids, that is) behind while we sailed the seas with Mickey & Minnie. Both parents needed to be present for the applications. Jon was out-of-town Tuesday-Thursday on a trip for work, so he'd planned to take off Friday morning so we could head down to the passport office. All I had to do was fill out the applications. Oh, and take the pictures. Which I thought of at 7:30 on Thursday when I was finishing up baths.
It can't be that hard though, right? We have a good camera and a white wall. All I would need to do is bring all of our lamps out to the living room so we had good lighting and get the kids to take turns sitting on a stool...
Of course there are all sorts of rules about these things. Mouth closed, look straight at camera, don't smile, don't frown, keep your hair out of your face, etc. Then a bunch of sizing requirements, but I was going to leave that for Jon & photoshop.
With Ruby out of the way in just three quick snaps, I felt pretty confident. Her pictures had a distinct mug shot look to them, but they passed the whole checklist, so on to the little man:
"No smiling, buddy. Okay? And I guess we'll have to photoshop out the outlet."
"Cheese!"
"No really, buddy. No smiling."
"Okay, new plan. Can you hide the sticker from mommy? Stand at the wall and put your back on the sticker."
"Ooooh. Sticker."
"Hey! What's that sticker doing sneaking up on me?"
"Now I got you, sticker!"
"Now the sticker's on my cheek! And I see a choking hazard on the floor I must investigate."
"Did I mention I can dance?'
It went on and on like this for about 40 minutes.
When peek-a-boo started I took that as a sign that it just wasn't going to happen. So I loaded the kids into the car and drove to Kinko's. It was 9:15 when we got there. Yes, the children are usually asleep then.
We spent 45 minutes at Kinko's. The only way to keep Alex from making goofy faces was to give him mini-Oreos and then the photographer would take the picture when he closed his mouth to chew. We got three possible photos that way, but the tech was convinced that they wouldn't get approved so she gave them to us for free.
So the next day we head to the Post Office. We arrived at 9:30 and were already 27th in line. But once we got through they took Alex's picture no problem and a week later (no kidding) our passports arrived.
