April and I have been on a movie-watching spree this last month due to a free Blockbuster Online trial membership. We've been pleased as punch to sift through the annals of moviemaking history and find all the movies we've wanted to see for years, as well as the movies we feel like we're supposed to have seen.
In that latter category is The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. It's the old Humphrey Bogart prospectin' for gold and trouble film from back in 1948, and it's on all sorts of "best movies of all time" lists and even won a few Oscars back in the day. Well, forget about all that. The real reason this movie is a classic, and the reason its influence is felt to this day, is this:
I DON'T HAVE TO SHOW YOU ANY STEENKIN' BATCHES!!
That's right! This is the movie that started it all! I was shocked and delighted to hear ol' Gold Hat utter the immortal line about halfway through the movie. Every time you hear some parody on the "steenkin' badges" line, think fondly of Alfonso Bedoya and his unforgettable delivery of this unforgettable impudence.
And get this: Some guy has gone to the trouble of chronicling every instance in popular media where this line has popped up. From the A-Team to Law & Order to the Transformers cartoon series -- it's everywhere.
Next on the Blockbuster list: Doctor Zhivago. It's long and Russian, so the odds of uncovering a good quote are slim. But I hear its won some awards and stuff.
